  • She told campaign staff of her decision in a conference call on Tuesday
  • Harris’ strong start in January 2019 had seen her garner huge crowds for her campaign launch but she has cratered in the polls
  • The latest average had put her at just 3 per cent, with Michael Bloomberg, the multi-billionaire former New York mayor, entering at 6 per cent this week
  • Her husband David Emhoff posted a message to Twitter as her decision to quit emerged saying: ‘I’ve got you. As always.’
  • Move leaves a total of 15 candidates in the field: 11 men and four women, with two of the men African-American, one Asian-American and one Latino
