NYC to ‘BAN’ paper receipts because of their links to breast cancer and brain damage after plans to outlaw foie gras and plastic bags

  • New York City Council members plan to introduce a package of laws to require alternatives to paper receipts coated with bisphenol A, or BPA
  • The chemical has been suspected of interacting with human hormones to cause breast cancer and brain damage
  • The chemical is commonly used in cash register reciepts and other consumer products, including plastic food containers and beverage bottles
  • Federal regulators already have banned the use of BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups used by young children
  • Merchants instead will have to offer email reciepts or receipts made from recycled paper and have dumpsters available for discarding them
  • New York state has a ban on plastic bags that goes into effect in March, as city restaurants prepare to stop serving foie gras by 2022
