Parshas Vayetze with Rabbi Yosef Katzman

And Yaacov (Jacob) vowed; “If G-d will be with me, and He will guard me on the path that I am going, and He will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear. And if I return in peace to my father’s house, the Lord will be my God.

Is Yaacov really setting conditions with G-d?

What does he mean that if G-d will protect me on this path, what path?

And if I return in peace the Lord will be my G-d, what’s so special about that, of course if you get everything from G-d He will be your G-d, isn’t this a no-brainer?!

But Yaacov is telling us the story of life, Yaacov in Hebrew is יעקב from the root ‘heel’, Yaacov is the heel of the Jewish people, the most bottom part of the Jewish collective body and soul.

The soul originates from the highest most elevated spiritual level, a spark of G-d, and it descends into a physical body on a journey, with a mission to elevate the mundane physical world of eating and drinking, to G-dly levels of spirituality.

This trip is treacherous and full of detours; one slight deviation off the path and you are lost.

For that you need a good GPS, a G-dly GPS, hence the request that G-d be with me and protect me.

The ultimate goal is to take the physical and make peace between it and the spiritual, and that’s a major accomplishment to have the physical and spiritual coexist.

Therefore Yaacov says “And if I return in peace to my father’s house”, saying, that upon completion of this journey I will have made peace between the high and the low.

Finally, then and only then, the lord will be my G-d.

In Hebrew it says: והי’ השם לי לאלקים the Lord השם (Hashem) which is the brightly-shining-G-dly-spirit, will become coexistent with אלקים (Elokim), the concealed G-d that enabled the creation of the physical world.

Meaning, that upon completion of life’s journey, when we succeed to make peace between the spiritual and the physical, we make peace between the Supreme Being that is way above creation, and the G-d that allows creation.

You see, in order to allow the world to come into existence, G-d, Hashem, needed to conceal Himself, otherwise everything would be overpowered by the Super-G-dly-Light, so G-d concealed Himself in a self-protective layer called Elokim, which serves like the ozone layer that protects from the powerful light of the sun.

But after the completed trip, the world becomes so elevated, that it is no longer overpowered by the G-dly lights, because the world rose to the highest G-dly levels and became one with G-d, creation and creator made peace and they can now coexist.

And this starts with Yaacov, the lowest level, the heel of the Jewish people, and it rises to make unity and peace between G-d and His creations.

Have a peaceful delicious Shabbos,
